Ace Your Sorority Interviews with These Insider Tips!
Sorority recruitment can be both an exhilarating and nerve-wracking experience. You’re excited about the prospect of joining a sisterhood, but the pressure to make a great impression can be intense. Fear not! We’re here to help you navigate the process with confidence and ease. With a few insider tips, you can have amazing rush etiquette and form meaningful connections that will make you stand out. Remember, recruitment is as much about finding the right fit for you as it is about the sororities finding the right fit for them. So, let’s dive into how you can make the most of your conversations and truly shine during rush week.
Remember, a Conversation (and Sorority Recruitment) is a Two-Way Road
The majority of the conversations you’ll have during recruitment will be about getting to know you. Sororities want to see if you’re a good fit for their house, and because their members prepare for months, they often control the conversation by asking questions about you. However, it’s equally important for you to ask them questions too.
For starters, you need to see if the sorority is a good fit for you, and getting to know some of its members is a great way to do so. It can also allow you to find common ground with you and the active and lead to a more authentic conversation over similar interests.
Double the Questions, Double the Fun
Ask the active questions too! From personal experience, it can be tough for interviewers to continuously come up with rapid-fire questions that receive simple answers. I remember my sisters and I saying that we’d ask the PNMs about their majors, hometowns, and classes, and we’d joke to each other that we also have majors, hometowns, and classes but were never asked about them. Remember, people love talking about themselves so they’ll look back upon your conversation fondly.
Asking the same questions of the active also doubles the amount of talking time, increasing the number of talking points and decreasing the likelihood of awkward lulls in conversation. You’re going to make a better impression and form deeper connections if you give as much as you take from rush week conversations. In other words, treat the experience less like an interview (where they do all the asking and you do all the answering) and more like a conversation with a friend (after all, that’s exactly the kind of relationship you’re trying to form).
Here are some rush questions to ask actives:
Where are you from?
What’s your major?
What do you like to do for fun?
What made you choose this sorority?
What are some of your favorite sorority memories?
Take Notes
In between parties, take notes to help you keep track of conversations, general impressions, and lingering questions. Write down the names of any women you really connect with so that if you see them again, you can greet them by name. Personal connections really do make a big difference!
It’s common for sororities to pair you with someone who rushed you in an earlier round during the last round, known as Preference. Usually, this sorority member has given you great reviews and has been rooting for you, so it’s important to remember who rushed you and what you talked about.
Embrace Repetition
You might find yourself frustrated by all the repetition, and it might show. Basically, recruitment is like speed dating, meaning you’re going to have the same introductory/get-to-know-you conversations over and over again, especially during the first round of parties. Embrace it! Each conversation is an opportunity to make a unique connection. And if anything, rather than look at it as the same conversation you’ve had all day, look at it as a conversation you feel comfortable participating in.
Avoid Memorizing a Script
While it’s important to have talking points and ensure that you highlight your best qualities and accomplishments, it’s also crucial to establish genuine connections. You can do this by sharing funny stories, finding interesting common grounds, or having authentic conversations. However, you won’t achieve this by following a script where you force a conversation against the natural flow to insert facts from your resume.
Be Authentic!
When it comes to sorority interviews, there's a big difference between showcasing your best self and pretending to be someone you're not. It might be tempting to "play the part" and act like a stereotypical "sorority girl," but this can backfire once you choose a house and might even hurt your chances during recruitment. Sororities work hard to pair PNMs with actives who share similar interests and values. If you put on a different persona, you might not click with your active, and your unique qualities might not shine through, making it harder to stand out among other hopeful PNMs.
For example, if you love skateboarding and your wardrobe reflects that, embrace it! You might prefer wearing pants and sneakers or sandals over a dress and heels—and that's perfectly fine! Just make sure you adhere to the dress code regarding formality, but feel free to wear what makes you comfortable. The sorority may already know about your skateboarding passion and will likely try to pair you with an active who shares that interest. If they see you in an outfit that reflects your personal style, it could be a refreshing change and spark engaging conversations. Below are some clothing options for those who might not be into dresses and heels.

Find ways to be Unique

Think unique prints and silhouettes or gorgeous jewelry. We found a few pieces that only you will be wearing and are guaranteed to leave a lasting impression on the active!
By following these insider tips, you’ll be well on your way to acing your sorority interviews. Remember to keep the conversation balanced, make genuine connections, and embrace the process with an open heart.
Good luck, and enjoy every moment of recruitment!
